Arches National Park - Located 236 miles south east of Salt Lake City and about 60 miles west of Grand Junction (Colorado). accommodation can be found in Moab or Monticello, both of scenic route 191 running down the state from US70 towards Monument Valley. Other nearby places to stay could include Green River to the North West or Blanding south of Monticello.

Here there are dozens of stone arches and red sandstone spurs, which have been carved by the erosive actions of water wind sun and frost over the last 150 million years or so.

Delicate Arch is probably the best known feature in the park, this edifice stands at the edge of a slick rock bowl, some 46 ft high and with a width of almost 35 ft. from its vantage point the views of the Colorado River Canyons and the La Sal Mountains can be appreciated.

Landscape Arch is reputed to have formed one of the longest natural stone arches in the world, but is suffering badly from erosion.

Park Avenue, (an easy hike of around 1 mile) is a spectacular corridor between high vertical rock walls, and here the group of stones known as the Three Gossips, The Balanced Rock and Delicate Arch ( which can be reached by a footpath) can be found.

The Delicate Arch trails begins at the Wolfe Ranch parking area, and is considered to be a moderately hard 3 mile round trip (allow 3 hours).

Devils Garden Trail starts from the trailhead passing several arches and offers some excellent view of the Hoodoos (spurs). It is a two mile (1 hour) round trip to Landscape Arch, and 4 miles (2 hour) round trip to Double O Arch.
There are 21 miles of surfaced road in the park, and for all terrain vehicles countless other tracks and trails.
The Park is open all year, but please be aware of the extremes of winter and summer temperatures and come suitably prepared.

Monticello

Situated around 10 miles south west of Arches, you will find Utah's largest National Park, the orange coloring of the cliffs is due to the ochre rich landscape, as they raise imperiously above the ever winding Colorado and Green Rivers, which after their marriage they become a white water rapids as they cut through cataract canyon.

Island in the Sky The park has only 25 miles of surfaced road in the Island in the Sky region, which forms the highest and most northern part of the park at an elevation of 6000ft.

Along the road here you will find the Grand View overlook, which opens on a vista of 100's of miles of canyon, and 1200ft below is the white rim, an almost continuous sandstone beach. Other trails lead to overlooks arches and an unusual feature known as upheaval dome, this geological curiosity looks more like a meteor crater

The Needles and Maze areas form the rest of the park, and can be reached only by Jeep, foot, or horseback.

The Maze is the western and most rugged portion of the park, it is a chaotic mix of canyons, towers and buttes, in the Land of standing rocks Dolls house and the Fins.

Horseshoe Canyons Prehistoric cultures have stamped their presence in the Maze, ghostlike towering figures are painted on the walls of Great Gallery (Horseshoe Canyons).

The Needles in the south east corner of the park is a fascinating region of arches spires, canyons, prehistoric Indian ruins and pictographs.
