Big Bend National Park


Approached via us 385 from Marathon which leads directly to the park headquarters' at Panther Junction, or the I18 from Alpine, to Study Butte, via the FM 170 from Presidio, both of which lie along US90, this region sits on the Mexican Border and the Ro Grande forms its southern boundary. The last places you may pick up grocery or hardware would be Alpine, Fort Stockton or Del Rio. Additionally the Park also has three or four campers stores with limited stocks

The well known Rio Grande runs through some quite impressive canyons in this park, which is named from the natural bend of the river in this region.

The nearest major airports are in Midland/Odessa, Texas (235 miles from park headquarters) and El Paso, Texas (330 miles from park headquarters), Rentals cars are available at both

There are deserts, canyons mountainous peaks and tumbling waterfalls contained within it boundaries.

The climate here can vary remarkably throughout the seasons, from the lowest ecosystem found along the river, to that of the 7800ft. escarpments of the Chisos Mountains.

Spring and early summer can be over 100deg. in the river bed and valleys, and there is usually little rainfall at this period, the winter is usually mild but temperatures can drop below freezing at times.

The southern boundary of the park contains some 118 miles of rivers, and canyons such as Boquillas, Marischal and Santa Elena.

Over the eons, the Rio Grande has carved deep and steep canyons through the mountains.
The steep crests of which were once the home of the Comanche Indians, are clad in forests of Oak Pine and Juniper, and support a variety of wild life, including deer, coyote, peccary and mountain lion, along with many species of bird life.

The desert boasts a flora of giant cactus etc, and is the home of snakes kangaroo rats and road runners.

To catch the flavor of the desert as you travel towards the Rio Grande take the Ross Maxwell scenic drive, along the wayside you will find many scenic stopping points, and at the end of the drive, take a short walk into the Santa Elena Canyon.

Guadalupe Mountain National Park

Normally approached along US 62 (US180) which links El Paso (110miles) in the West with Carlsbad Caverns(37 miles) and Carlsbad itself (55miles) in the east.

The Headquarters Visitor Center at Pine Springs is accessed via U.S. highway 62/180 between Carlsbad, NM and El Paso, TX. Dog Canyon, on the park's north side, is accessed via New Mexico state road 137.

The Nearest major airport is in El Paso Texas, which is around 110 miles by car from the Park.

Pine Springs canyon forms the main valley in the center of the park, at front of this canyon lies the Parks Headquarters (normally open all year except for Christmas Day 8.00am to 4.00pm)

A separate access road in the east will take you to McKittrick Canyon.
The Guadalupe range terminates at is southern end with the massive buttress of the 2000ft "El Capitan" which looks out over the desert stretching out below.
The Guadalupe peak is the highest point in Texas standing at some 8749ft. this limestone formation, which rises from the Chihuahuan desert contains a prehistoric and significant limestone reef which holds many fossil bearing rocks

On the parks North side which is approached via NM 137 off the 285 North of Carlsbad you can get to Dog Canyon a spur leads off this road to Sitting Bull Falls.
