Located one mile to the south of Ruby's Inn at Bryce, which is an excellent stop over.
Fairyland scenery of glittering rocks and cliff faces sculptured by wind and rain into the most amazing forms and striking colors, varying from yellow through orange to deep red.
The brightly colored formations of spires and pinnacles commonly called Hoodoos, lay on the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, for 17 miles the amphitheatres of Bryce Canyons rise from 7600 to over 9000ft
The rim drive is 35 miles round trip, there are several view points such as Sunrise and Sunset, which are self explanatory, where you can hike the trails leading off between the tortured rocks pillars and forms. Beware the trails are easy going down but moderate to steep on the return, so pace yourself, and take into consideration that the high elevation here will rob your lungs of oxygen.
The easiest trail begins at Sunrise point, known as the Queens Garden Trail it descends 320ft and is about 1.5 miles 1.5 hours round trip.
The hardest is the Navajo Loop trail it is a strenuous hike past the formation known as the Silent City, it begins at Sunset point and descends 521ft (Make sure you have a supply of water with you) it is again 1.5 miles and in theory 1.5 hours round trip.
If you go in late spring or summer the wild flowers alone will make the trip worthwhile, which include Paintbrush, Columbine, Yarrow & Penstemon. Between April to October the weather is warm with occasional Thunder Showers and cool evenings,
Horse back tours of a couple of hours to half a day can be arranged at Bryce Canyon Lodge.
Wildlife is prolific here - Coyote, Mule Deer, Prairie Dogs, Chipmunks, Grey Fox, and more than 160 species of bird.
Bird Watching - three distinct habitats here support a varied bird-life, good birding is found in the Pinyon Pinejuniper-Gambel oak areas of Jolly Hollow, the mossy cave area, and along the trail from the sunset point to the town of Tropic, you are likely to find Scrub and Pinyon Jays, Black throated Grey Warbler, and Cassin's Kingbird. In the Pondorosa Pine Sage areas, best bets are in the meadows around the visitor center and around Sunrise and Sunset viewpoints, here you may find Bluebirds, Tanagers, Warblers, Olive Sided Flycatcher and Town-sender's Solitaire. In the Douglas and White Fir Forests, observe closely at Rainbow Point where you may find Williamson's Sap Sucker, Hermit Thrush, and Ruby Crowned Kinglet.
This area can be reached via US 70 and highway 89 from Denver and Salt Lake City and Page, or US 15 and highway 9 from Las Vegas via Cedar City and Beaver (or Elk Meadows) to Salt Lake City
Good places to stay are .
To the North Ruby's Inn closest to the Canyon and Panguitch again quite close.
On the Southern approaches to the area the towns of Kanab - Mount Carmel Junction - Glendale
Red Canyon is located byway 12 about two miles from the junction with US89, on the road from Panguitch - (popular for fishing on the lake 17 miles south west of this town on scenic byway 143) - this well paved drive will take you through amazing weather sculptured rock formations just before Bryce Canyon, and sometimes is referred to as Little Bryce, you can rent horses here to take you into untouched countryside, and also to Butch Cassidy's hideout !. This beautiful and forested canyons area is also popular for photography, hiking and mountain biking, and as an added bonus the fact that they are well away from built up areas make the night sky a perfect stage for star gazing, as the stars appear before you like diamonds strewn across black velvet.
