209 miles south of Salt Lake City, and some 120 miles or so West of Grand Junction in Colorado.
Serviced by Utah route 24 of Utah 89 at Salina traveling from the West and I70 (US50) traveling from the East.

The name of the park is derived from its most outstanding geological formations, "Reef" describes a ridge of rock which acts as a barrier, "Capitol" is in deference to the white sandstone peaks which look down from the higher elevations, one if which resembles the US Capitol.

The most impressive views are seen when the park is entered from the west, as you see the 1000ft thick stone barrier to its best advantage, over the aeons, erosive forces have sculptured mesas, buttes, mazes and canyons.

Within a short distance from the visitor center you will see Capitol Dome, Chimney Rock, Goosenecks, Egyptian Temple, Hickman Bridge, the latter is 133ft long and rises to a height of 125ft, and Capitol Gorge, all of which are your reward for taking the easy to moderate hikes.

There is a 25 miles scenic drive, along the rim of a chain of gorges cut out by the Fremont River, here you can find the many rock paintings which are evidence of the past occupations by American Indians, these date from the 9th to the 13th Century.

The north of the park is only accessible by Jeep, but here there are the most beautiful of rock formations not the least of which is Cathedral Valley.

The bandit Butch Cassidy once took refuge in this area.

Located some 50 miles or so south of Capitol Reef on Scenic by way 95 off Utah 24 at Hanksville you will pass through Glen Canyon's northern end where it greets the waters of Cataract Canyon, before finally making this destination, please note it is advisable to carry a supply of drinking water when traveling this route which eventually meets US 163 and Monument Valley.

Theodore Roosevelt declared this a national monument in 1908, there are three impressive natural great rock arches here, these are the result of the erosive powers of two tributaries of the Colorado River, Kachina Bridge measure some 206ft across, Owachomo Bridge is 180ft across and Sipapu Bridge is the largest at 258ft across, the Anasazi Indians settled here long ago, and it has more than 200 architectural ruins of interest, which can be easily reached by the visitor.

Bridge View Drive is an 8 mile scenic route which winds across the canyons from the visitor center, Natural Bridges differ from the Arches of Arches National Park, as their spans have been created by the flooding of silt laden streams, which washes out the soft rock in its course and leaving the span intact, Arches are holes in rock caused by weathering - mainly rainwater, ice and wind.

Be careful if the weather is bad as the region is subject to violent storms.
