Carlsbad Caverns National Park
The park is open all year except for Christmas day.
Located off U.S. Highway 62/180 from either Carlsbad, New Mexico (23 miles to the northeast) or El Paso, Texas (150 miles to the west). A scenic 7-mile (11.3 km) entrance road leads from the park gate at Whites City to the visitor center and cavern entrance. The park is open all year except for Christmas day.

These caverns began to form around 250 million years ago, this region was then a limestone reef formed from the remains of fungi algae and the shells of sea creatures, which was washed by a large shallow inland sea.

As the reef grew natural cracks developed and of course the sea began to evaporate, causing the formation of salt and gypsum deposits, which eventually buried the reef.

Several million years ago, the ground began to rise, and as the area was then exposed to erosion the rock reef once again experienced the light of day. Rainwater which was slightly acidic after passing through the regions soil began to soak downwards through cracks in the reef and this began the slow process which today has resulted in the formation of these fascinating underground caverns.

After the cavern had developed, Stalactites and Stalagmites began to form as the minute limestone and mineral deposits were carried down by the constant dripping waters and solidified into their present forms, many of which are still growing today.

You will find the main reception area, sitting on a cactus occupied ridge in the Sonoran Desert. There is a visitor center and restaurant opening times are from 7.00 am onwards and closing times vary but usually no earlier than 5.00pm. Self guided and accompanied tours start around 8.30.

To do the entire walking tour of the caverns you should allow around three hours, and you will have descended 830ft below the desert floor, along the main corridor to the Green Lake Room, Kings Palace, Queens Chamber, Papoose Room, and the Big Room - which in itself will take 1.5 hours to fully tour or 45 minutes to do the short cut. There are benches and a lift for wheelchair and disable access. Everyone uses the lift to exit, and at the bottom of the lift you will find rest rooms, food and even a telephone.

If you are traveling with babies then it is advisable to bring a baby back pack as strollers are not allowed into the caves

The caverns are the home of many species of bat, including the Mexican Free tail, Western Pipistrelle and Red Bat.

Not to be missed is the rather spectacular coming and goings each dawn and evening of the bat colony.

Bat Flights
As dusk falls, there will be a few bats appear, but after some minutes thousand of them leave the cave in an upward spiral of whirling bodies.
At Dawn their return is even more spectacular as each bat poises momentarily above the cave entrance, closes its wings against it body and plummets downwards into the darkness, with the large volume of small bodies hurtling earthwards a strange buzzing sound fill the air.

The best times to see the bat flights are during August & September.

In Late October to early November they migrate to Mexico for the winter, returning once again in April to the end of May.

Prior to the Bat flights, the Park gives talks, the starting time to co-incide with the sunset, if you are planning a visit to Carlsbad Caverns, and wish to see the bats fly, then call the park on 505 785 3102 for current  times or call in at the Visitor Center, there are no charges for these events.

Wheelchair access and toilet facilities can be found at the amphitheater.

Please note no still photography is allowed although video photography is allowed.
