This fascinating ruins contains a once very imposing 4 story building, believed to have been inhabited around 1350 by the Hohokam people, the name Hohokam means "those who have disappeared" for this race of talented builders who were closely related to the Pueblo and Anasazi Indians, had extensively populated and developed the areas of the Gila and Salt Rivers from around 300 BC to 1400 AD. at which time they vanished in a most mysterious way.
The Structure itself was once part of one of their settlements which appeared along the Gila river, and all of these where linked by a sophisticated irrigation system of canals, the region is extremely hot in summer, with temperatures of 110 deg f or more not uncommon. Casa Grande can be seen whilst you are still some distance from it, and sits protected from the deserts burning sun by its own large metal shade. Once you approach closer, you realize that the structure is impressive being some 60ft wide and 40 ft long at the base the walls of which are over 1 meter thick.
