All of which feed the scenic rim road around the crater.
The lake which is more than 5 miles across, is contained within the caldera of a volcanic basin, and is the result of the collapse of the 1200ft high Mount Mazama following a major eruption.
The Surface of the lake rarely freezes, the temperature of the lake varies between 33 deg f. and 66 deg f at the surface.
The region never gets less than 243 inches of snowfall, and in some years has been known to get 879 inches or so, The temperatures from January to March average 19 deg. f at night and 36 f. during the day, July to September average 40f at night and 70 f, during the day.
Snowfall now accounts for most of the waters which replenish the lakes contents, the reflection of the surround peaks in the clear dark blue of its waters makes a stunning picture.
Rim Drive is a 33 mile scenic highway, which follows the lakeside, and along it are several observation platforms easily reached by car, the region has more than 90 miles of hiking trails, amongst which is a strenuous hike to Watchman's Peak, which take around an hour, the elevation of this trail is from 7400ft to 8056ft. The start of the walk is just over 3.5 miles NW or Rim Village, which is on the West Rim Drive, or Lightening Spring Picnic Area.
Perhaps a more gentle hike would be that around wizard island, which is reachable by boat, this volcanic island climbs 764ft out of the waters of the lake, and on its summit there is a small 300ft diameter crater which has a depth of 90ft. James Sutton editor of the Oregon Sentinel in Jacksonville named this island in 1869.
Or why not do the Godfrey Glen trail which is a 1 mile loop, considered to be easy. This can be found 2.5 miles South of the Park Headquarters, here you will get views of Annie Creek Canyon, and at the right time wild flowers and of course animals.
In the summer months the best place to see the wild flowers is along the Castle Crest Wildflower Garden trail, this is a half mile loop from East Rim Drive or a mile loop from the Park Headquarters.
The area teems with wildlife, amongst which you will find Black Bear, Elk, Coyote, Wildcat, Raccoons, River Otter, Red Fox, and the endangered Bald Eagle.
During the summer guided walks and talks, campfire programs and junior ranger programs are offered by the National Park Service.
The nearest places to find hotel accommodation would be either in Klamath Falls some 60 miles south on the shores of Klamath Lake, or Medford a similar distance to the south west. Both these cities have regional airports, and car rental services are normally available
