Death Valley national Park
From October to April the temp here rarely gets above 86 deg F daytime, July can
reach 134 deg F (113 f. is normal)
The extra ordinary landscapes are often veiled during the heat of the day with a
shimmering haze.
Is the most amazing of places, extremes of temperature between night and day
have made this one of the most inhospitable regions, yet that is not really the
case, providing you are sensible, If you are driving through make sure that your
gas tank is full, your spare is in good order, and carry extra water, some for
the car, some for you. traveling south along the 395 from Bishop, you will turn
left onto the 136 at Lone Pine and the pick up the 190 - traveling from Sequoia
as there is no route over the Sierra Nevada Mountains you will have to take
highway 198 to Visalia and then highway 99 southbound to Delano, then highway
155 to Lake Isabella, and join highway 178 east and turn north onto highway 14
to pick up the 178 again through Ridgecrest and Trona and then turn east along
highway 190.
At Stove pipe Wells you can fill up and shortly after you will see sand dunes,
in another 20 miles after a right turn you arrive at Furnace Creek.
Scotty's Castle lies 52 miles north west of here along highway 190, built along
Hollywood Hispano-Moorish style, between 1922 and 1931 there are guided tours
available.
Uubehebe Crater about 500 ft deep and half a mile across lies to the west of
here, it is not the only volcanic crater to be found in Death Valley, there are
clusters of craters to its south and west, these are known as Maar Volcanoes,
created by steam and gas explosions, when hot magma rising up from the depths
mixed with ground water.
Things to see along highway 178
Zabriskie Point at the crossing of highways 178 and 190, go a few miles east on
the 190 to the parking area, here strange rocky dunes in tawny shades offer
superb views over the valley.
Artist Drive a scenic 9 mile stretch of sculptured rock in every shape and color.
- dist. from furnace creek is 11m south. narrow one way road.
The Devils Golf course with its weird salt formations. 8m south of Furness Creek
Badwater is the next stop a salt water pool and the lowest in the US at 82
metres below sea level. - 16 m south of Furnace Creek.
Dante's view one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world lies 23m south
east of Furnace Creek.
if you continue along highway 178 to the junction with highway 160 you can
follow that road into, Las Vegas or return via Furnace Creek.
Mojave Desert
Death Valley lies within the boundaries of the larger Mojave Desert, which
covers around 25,000 sq miles of the USA and in turn lies within the area
bordered roughly in the north by US 50 Nevada, east by the I15, west by US 395
through California and on the South by I10 also in California.
This region endures extreme variations in daily temperatures, it can be freezing
during the winter months whilst the summer brings baking hot days
Where to stay when travelling through the Death Valley area
East of Death Valley National Park hotels and lodgings can be found in most
of the towns on Highway 95 in Nevada. Tonopah, Goldfield, Beatty, Indian
Springs, and Las Vegas. Lodgings can be found also Amargosa Valley and at
Stateline on Highway 373 in Nevada, and at, Shoshone, Tecopa, and Baker on
Highway 127 in California and at Pahrump, Nevada, which is located midway
between Death Valley and Las Vegas.
West of Death Valley National Park along Highways 395/14 and 178 you will find
Mohave, Ridgecrest, Inyokern, Olancha, Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine,
Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, and Lee Vining. We list the more well known
stop overs with reasonable aaccommodation.
