Denali National Park Denali is the Athabascan name for Mt McKinley, the Mountain from which is takes its name, this is the highest peak in North America, located in Alaska's Interior and comprising some 6 million acres of raw beauty, it is home to a wide variety of wildlife, plus some 650 species of flowering plants, (including Alaska's state flower, the forget-me-not) mosses, lichens, etc. In 1917n the park was established to preserve the delicate balance of nature and wildlife. Mount McKinley is definitely the most impressive feature of the Alaskan Landscape, this mountain and the range above which is stands are part of a Mountainous region known as the Alaska Range, which forms a natural land barrier between the coastal lowlands of Anchorage and the northernmost interior of Alaska. Most of the peaks of this range are not exceptionally high being lass than half the height of McKinley Recreational opportunities here include hiking, rock and ice climbing, photography and wild life viewing, nature walks, horse back treks, slide programs, sled dog demonstrations, and of course tours of the park itself. An ideal way to arrive at Denali is by the railway links and their panoramic coaches, it can be very pleasant to enjoy a delightfully served meal in the restaurant car on board one of these vehicles as you make you way gently and steadily through the unfolding countryside. These can be boarded either in Anchorage or Fairbanks for either one way or round trips, Be up early in the morning to take best advantage of the shuttle bus and guided tours, as the animals are most likely to be seen early and late in the day, if luck is with you, you are likely to encounter a selection of the following, caribou, grizzly bear, wolf, moose, Dall sheep, lynx, ground squirrels, marmots, fox, and snow shoe hares, the majority of the parks birdlife visit during the summer months but the year round residents include, raven, great horned owls, and three species of ptarmigan. The Dall sheep need windswept ridges which are blown free of snow, which enables them to reach available grasses and other forage throughout the year, most sheep winter north of the park road in the Outer Range, Whilst the best Moose habitat lies east of the Toklat River at elevations less than 300ft. Occasionally moose may be found above the timberline, as with most of the animals the young usually put in an appearance during May and June. There are no snakes or lizards, but there is one amphibian, known as the Wood Frog it can be sometimes seen in the Wonder Lake area. A 91 mile road traverses the park, with views of Wonder Lake, Savage River Canyon, Polychrome Pass, the Outer Range, Sanctuary River, Muldrow Glacier and the Kantishna Hills, it begins at the Riley Creek Information Center, and winds westwards, and it intersects five rivers, all of which flow north from their origins in the glaciers along the crest of the Alaskan Range, it follows a major North American geological fault, and breaches four tundra mountain passes, sable pass is a favored feeding area for the grizzly bear, and this sub alpine tundra gives the right conditions for the abundant growth of grasses sedges and other vegetation which these large animals find gastronomically delightful, the Toklat River is another good place to find bears feeding during the fall months. No hiking is allowed in the region of Sable Pass, passengers on park buses, and other vehicles must remain on the road at all times. Sable pass is an ideal place to see Tundra at its best in Fall. Tundra is used to describe a broad range of alpine and arctic vegetation, generally treeless slopes of low shrubs and sedges, Tundra areas in Denali have a mosaic of plant species relative to the differences in sun and soil patterns etc., different types are designated moist wet and alpine, and as fall approaches this vegetation takes on the most beautiful hues of red and russet, turning the hillsides and plain into a mass of blazing color. To the South East of the National Park, Denali State Park is famous for Panoramic views of Mount McKinley and the Alaskan Mountain Range. Anchorage. to Denali National Park is approximately 236 miles Fairbanks... to Denali National Park is approximately 125 miles The Interior of Alaska in June usually enjoys and average temperature range of 70/49 deg. f. and 21.39 daylight hours. |
