Dinosaur National Monument

Situated some 15 miles east of Vernal Utah, along the I40, (take the turn off onto the 149 at Jenson to the Visitor Center) and West from Dinosaur in Colorado along the I40 (to the 149) Nearest place to stay Vernal (Utah)

Here you will find quarries with the fossil remains of many prehistoric animals, the visitor center has a collection of these.

The larger part of the park is in Colorado, and it is an area of rugged desert and canyons, some of these are over 2600ft deep. You will find some excellent views of the Green and Yampa Rivers, which run below there is access to this section off the I40 2 miles east of Dinosaur 

 

Mesa Verde National Park
This is the best known of the cliff dwelling sites you can find in North America, The dwellings are impressive, but then so is the character of terrain, the site consist of dozens of Multi Level houses and Towers situated along the ancient terraces and streets, all of which cling to the cliff face seemingly defying gravity, in this glorious desert canyon setting.

The people who occupied this region where the Anasazi Indians who suddenly and mysteriously disappeared some six centuries ago. 

Amongst the most impressive structures are The Cliff Palace, which has 217 rooms, and Spruce Tree house with 114 rooms, visits can be made only in the company of a ranger, and you will need good footwear and a certain amount of physical fitness 

There is a Native American Museum is located near to the visitor center.
Halfway between the park entrance and the visitor center is Park Point Fire Look out, where you can see the States of Colorado Utah Arizona and New Mexico.

There are several varieties of trees here, ranging from Douglas Pine to Aspen, Pinyon Pine and Utah Juniper   Nearest place to stay Cortez

Rocky Mountain National Park
Situated some 70 miles north west of Denver and intersected by scenic routes US36 US34 and the I 7.

This is the highest and most rugged US region outside of Alaska, Longs Peak is the highest point at 14,255 ft. and there are many more which rise to over 10,000ft the lake boasts 150 lakes and on a still day each one gives a delightful reflection of the surrounding peaks, this is a place of roaring rivers, lakes teeming with fish, perpetual snow fields and glaciers, sprinkled liberally with dense forest, the home many animas including Moose and Big Horn sheep. There are over 300 miles of hiking trails, additionally climbing and fishing are good activities also.

US34 is the Trail Ridge Road, and it cuts through the park, giving splendid views along its length. This road is closed between Deer Ridge and Timber Creek from mid October to late June.
the US34 along with Fall River (Fall River Pass 1796ft) and Bear Lake road are amongst the highest in the USA and have steep gradients and many twists.

Estes Park on the East side is the gateway city to this region, and the Moraine Park Visitor Center and Museum are located 1 mile from the east entrance on US36. Nearest place to stay Estes Park
