US 2 joins the Going to the Sun Road (closed in winter) which bisects the park, and then joint US89 on its east side.
The Park is made up of around 1.4 million acres of mountains woods lakes waterfalls and alpine meadows, it sits across the continental divide which runs through it from north to south, and it contains over 50 glaciers which feed hundreds of lakes and countless streams.
This region was once the home of the Blackfoot and Kootenay Indians, there are still many of their sacred and spiritual sites in the park today.
The Going to the Sun Road 50 miles of hairpin bends and twisting road which has been blasted out of the side of a steep mountain, and along the shore of the two largest lakes in the park Lake St. Mary and Lake McDonald, between their waters it desperately clings to the cliff face as it traverses the continental divide at Logan Pass
Typically traveling from east to west, you will find the following points of interest:-
Two Dog Flats Here just after encountering the waters of Lake St Mary, you will find these native grasslands, the home of many small mammals, which are preyed upon by the Hawks, this is also the summer home of many songbirds, and in winter is become a major feeding area for a large Elk population.
Rising Sun Here lying mid way along the lake you can take a boat trip, and appreciate the mountains and scenery from it waters.
Sun Point There are some spectacular views of the lake from this stop, and there is a one mile self guided nature trail.
Baring Falls As you approach the end of the lake, Baring falls are the first of three falls to be seen from St. Mary Fall's Trail, the first is only 1/4 mile from the road.
Jackson Glacier Overlook At the end of the lake you will lies Jackson glacier, it provides water for both of the lakes, and in winter is buried deep under the snows, but as the summer temperatures melt them the glacier become visible once again.
Logan Pass At this altitude you will see the alpine meadow in its full glory during the short growing season, as the flowers bloom and become a vision of blazing color. It is advisable to come early of late in the day if you intend to spend some time here, as the parking is limited, and soon fills up.
Here you cross the continental divide at 6664ft above sea level.

Typically traveling from east to west, you will find the following points of interest as you traverse Logan Pass:-
Weeping Wall As you continue to climb you will find (during June and July) the chance of a free car wash as the waters tumble down the cliff face and onto most of the road.
Bird Woman Fall Overlook Further and on the right you will see these falls cascade from a hanging valley.
The Loop Arrive here and look at the view, which is dominated by Heaven's Peak.
Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche lake trail As you descend you will find this stopping point, here the trail winds through a forest of Cedar ad Hemlock, and the trail is easily accessible.
Sacred Dancing Cascades As you approach Lake McDonald, a series of small waterfalls and rapids can be seen along McDonald Creek, these are the home of Dippers ( a Robin like bird) and Harlequin Ducks, which you can watch as they vanish under the tumbling waters in search of insects.
On the right hand side of Lake McDonald you can find food and gifts shops at the Lodge.
Apgar Here at the foot of Lake McDonald you will find the visitor center.
Opening times The park itself is open 24 hours a day but during the Fall Winter and Spring you may find some road closed due to weather conditions. The Going to the Sun Rod opens usually around the first two weeks in June and closes the Monday after the third Sunday in October, unless forced to do so earlier because of snowfall. RV's are only allowed along this road if they are less than 8 ft wide and 21 ft long.
Weather In summer the daytime temperatures average 60/70 deg f. and the night drops to the 40's, you can get snow any time, especially so above the tree line, where the temperature is usually 10 to 15 deg. cooler.
Activities Camping hiking, fishing, boating, horse riding, cross country skiing, water skiing and snowshoe hiking.
Airport Glacier Park International Airport is at Kalispell, there is a shuttle to the park.
