Canyon de Chelly
Located 225 miles north west of Albuquerque, (International Airport) along highway 40, onto US 666 and the Arizona 264 and finally US 191.

Here the sheer red sandstone cliffs plunge over 1000ft into the breathtaking depths of the Canyons, shafts of sandstone reach skywards from the floor of the valley, and summer flash floods turn docile streams into torrents.

Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto are encompassed as one by this National Monument.
There are many tributary canyons, but the two main ones come together in a Vee near the monument headquarters located 6 miles east of Chinle, the paved drives along the rims of both canyons are interspaced with many vista points, overlooking the canyons and cliff dwelling ruins, which include White House, Mummy Cave and Antelope House, and date from the 4th to the 14th Century.
Spider Rock is an 1800 ft. needle of rock, and forms the most remarkable feature.

You can tour the area with one of the local tour guides or you may do a self-guided tour of the canyon look-out points. The canyon has a total of 11 look-out points, all which have views of ancient ruins, petroglyphs, and pictographs.

The canyons can be visited by jeep and horse back tours with Navajo guides April through to October.

Visitor Center and Museum opening times
8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day from October to April, and then 8 am to 6 pm during May to September.

Monument Valley
170 miles north east of Flagstaff (Pulliam Field Airport) along us 89 off onto highways 160 and at Kayenta the 163. This is the USA's best known picture postcard subject, painted by the changing rays of the sun in glorious Technicolor as the day progresses, more than 25 million years old the desert "Cathedrals" raise their red sandstone escarpments almost 2000ft above the floor, with names like Camel Bute, Sentinal Mesa, Three Sisters, Big Chief and Elephant Bute, which have provided the backdrop for countless western movies, as well as Walt Disney's "The Living Desert"

Very little grows here, just a few scrubby bushes and grasses which feed the scattered flocks of sheep.

Cars are allowed in summer along the 14 m circuit, but off season jeeps only, enquire at the Park Headquarters Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park (801/727-3287)

The climate of this region is typical of all semi deserts, the summers can be burning hot 95 to 104 f, by day, but dropping dramatically at night, in Spring and Fall you may need a sweater even in the daytime, August and September are the rainy months, and in winter the temperature can drop as low as 13 f.

Navajo National Monument
Reachable only on horseback or by foot and not far from Monument Valley, here you will find remarkable ruins of prehistoric Pueblo Indian villages dating from around 1300 who where known as the Kayenta Anasazi. They represent the early transition from hunter gatherers to a concept of farming, but they were only occupied for half a century or so, as they were then deserted and the occupiers appear to have moved elsewhere.

Beta akin Ruin you can see this only by taking a guided tour from the visitor center
