Many visitors expect to see a steep classic conical mountain, but Kilauea is a shield volcano built up in layers by many hundreds of thousands of lava flows, and its summit is a rolling plateau surrounding a depression which is referred to as a Caldera, this is formed when magma is withdrawn or erupts from a shallow magma reservoir beneath, causing the overlaying ground to collapse. It is estimated that Kilauea is around 100,000 years old, and Mauna Loa its big sister which looks down upon it from a western horizon is considered to be at least half a million years old. In the park you can encounter many different climates, from those at sea level to the summit of Mauna Loa which is some 1300ft. therefore whenever you come be prepared for anything the weather may consider subjecting you to, it is not uncommon for its head to be covered in snow during the winter months along with that of Mauna Kea (outside the park) the highest of them all on the island at 13796ft. Start your tour from the park headquarters, and unless something more spectacular is on offer - things change fast in the Volcanoes National Park - we suggest Crater Rim Drive, initially leave your car at the center, and take the short walk across the road to Volcano House, which sits right on the rim of the Caldera, with a terrace overlooking this spectacular scenery. Take a short walk from the Volcano House parking lot along earthquake trail, this 0.6m walk leads to Waldron ledge and gives a grand view of both volcanoes, this ledge is actually part of the rim of the Caldera, to the left you will see the reddish brown hill of the 1959 cinder cone, the product of an eruption in the nearby Kilauea Iki crater. The steaming black hole at the far end is known as Halemaumau. Now return to your car and leave visitor center initially turning left and then right onto the Crater Rim Drive, after around 1.4 miles stop at the Kilauea Iki crater, the smooth black surface which lies below you is the crusted over lava lake. A further 0.4 mile drive brings you to the Thurston Lava Tube, here a loop walking trail leads you through a small jungle filled crater and you pass through this cave in an old lava flow, initially the conduit formed by lava as it traveled quickly beneath the cooling surface of the lava flow, then when the river of hot lava feeding it stopped the resulting tube was created. In another 1.3 miles you will arrive at the Pu'u Pua'i overlook on devastation trail, turning right off crater rim drive here, you can park the car and take the 0.4 mile devastation trail, your will see the dead white logs of what was once a lush forest; near its southern end you will find Oah'a trees which were buried in less than 10ft of pumice, initially though to be dead, they began to re grow some 18 to 24 months after the initial eruption. At 0.9 mile further you can stops at Keanakako'i Crater, this pit crater sits on the left side of the road, it was formed by the collapse of the surface as the molten rock beneath it was removed. Walk the short path to the overlook to see the line of vents which fed the 1974 eruption. If the day is clear, the view of Mauna Loa is excellent.
Halemaumau crater is next at a further 1.2 miles, (please note that due to the noxious sulphur fumes which may be present here, if anyone amongst your party suffers from asthma or heart trouble it would be advisable to close the car windows, a brief exposure to a person in normal health is not thought to be harmful), this is considered to be the spiritual home of the goddess Pele, and followers still offer gifts to her, by throwing into the crater bottles of gin or money, you can take a 0.2m trail to the craters edge, notice the still steaming cracks, the crater is 3000ft wide and in 1985 was 280ft depth, but it changes over the years due to ground movement.
Another 1 mile brings you to the Southwest Rift Zone, these are regions of weakness in the flanks of the volcano, along which underground cracks are formed, here the thick cracks and gullies are of a buff colored ash which were deposited by the 1790 eruption.
Driving a further 1.8 miles you will arrive at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, take a look at the Jaggar museum and take in the views of the Kilauea Caldera and Halemaumau craters, from here you get some of the best views in the park.
1.4 miles further on turn left onto the Mauna Loa strip road to see the trees molds, just after the road crosses the main highway, take the short loop road to this point of interest, these were formed in prehistoric times when the lava flow engulfed a forest of trees (possibly Koa) and the holes in lava are the result of the trees burning and then rotting, leaving the pattern of the bark molded into the Lava.
At 1.8 miles further take a right at the road junction, to Kipuka Puaulu (known as the Bird Park) this a mile loop trail leads around sunny meadows and deep forest which are the home to many birds.
Stopping again in another 2.7 miles you find yourself at Steaming Bluff, this treeless plain forms a terrace between the cliffs of the Caldera, the ground just a few feet below it to hot for tree roots to survive, as the ground water seeps down and meets the hot volcanic rocks it generates steam which returns to the surface.
Leaving here take the next left side road at 0.5 of a mile to Sulphur Bank, here volcanic gases and steam seep to the surface, the gases are rich in carbon dioxide sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, deposits of pure bright yellow can be seen here.
In a further0.3 miles you will find yourself back at the Visitor Center
If you have three to four hours, you may also explore the East Rift and coastal area via Chain of Craters Road. This road descends 3,700 feet in 20 miles and ends where a 1995 lava flow crossed the road. Depending on changing volcanic activity, there may be opportunities for viewing active lava flows from the end of the road. No food or fuel is available along the Chain of Craters Road.
