Zion National Park
situated east of route 15 and approached along scenic highway 9 which runs through the park.
The nearest place to stay and find hotels just outside Zion National Park, would be Springdale. failing that around 17 miles away east are Hurricane and on the west Mount Carmel Junction

Zion's canyon,

rain bowed with pink red and white it follows the windings of the north fork of the Virgin River, here woods of Poplar Oak and Maple fringe the waterside.

Standing guard at the park entrance you will find the giant monolith of the Watchman which rises some 2600ft above the valley.

The seven mile long scenic drive

offers views of the most spectacular peaks of The Sentinel, Mountain of the Sun, Lady Mountain, and The Great White Throne which is located about three miles up river after the visitor, this edifice towers over 3000ft above the valley floor center, and many say that it is the cousin to Yosemite's El Capitan.

The West Temple

is just inside the park and rises to more than 4100ft is the highest peak in the southern part of Zion.

The Temple of Sinawava

is a natural amphitheater and lush oasis.

There are of course many trails to hike here, one of the most popular leads from the Temple and progresses to The Narrows, this rocky trail through a canyon whose walls seem to meet above your is quite an amazing path to Weeping Rock Trail where the cliff face continuously appear to be weeping from the spring which wells from its face, this is an easy self guided trail of around half a mile or so.

All of the above and many others are to be found in the south east corner of the park.

Kolob Canyon

section, here there is some spectacular scenery including the Kolob Arch with its 310ft span. This can only be reached by a 7 mile hike from Lee Pass along the La Verkin Creek trail, in total this is a strenuous 14 mile round trip.

Checkerboard Mesa,

here ancient sand beds have created a checkerboard pattern by the vertical fractures eroded over the years by the rain and snow melt.

Angels Landing,

is a high viewpoint, here Zion is spread out before you, and you are encircled by the vertical high red sandstone cliffs, providing you are physically fit and have strong nerves it is well worth the hike, which begins at The Grotto picnic area, and the last half mile follows a steep narrow ridge with a drop of 1500ft, this is a 5 mile round trip (allow around 4 hours)

Cedar Breaks National Monument
Just north of Zion along the I15 to Cedar City and then east along the 14 lies this part of the Dixie National Forest, the nearest places to stay are Brian Head 10 miles north and Cedar City around 15 miles west.

The enormous natural amphitheater which was created by erosion in the Markagunt plateau rises to 9840 ft, natural rock carvings in beautiful hues of red, orange, violet, and yellow, set off the deep green foliage of the coniferous woodlands, and the Alpine meadows of the mountains, which are covered with wildflowers from around mid June to mid August.
